Carina Saunders, 19, was last seen Oct. 8 or 9. Her remains were found Oct. 13 in a duffel bag behind the Homeland at NW 23 and Rockwell. She had been beheaded. Police want to talk to Perez, who was reported missing by his mother Oct. 10.

Perez had told his mother he had been helping a woman who was having problems with her boyfriend, and he had been threatened by the man. Perez was a culinary student and worked at an Olive Garden restaurant in the Oklahoma City area.

Perez is a self-described Juggalo, a fan of the hip-hop group Insane Clown Posse. The band is known for violent lyrics about themes such as murder and cannibalism. He is pictured on his Facebook page wearing a bandanna over his face and holding a hatchet.

Perez has a lengthy criminal history in the Tulsa area, including arrests for assault.

Police think Perez may have hitchhiked to California.

The victim had been beheaded, sources told The Oklahoman.

Her cause of death has not been determined.

Remains of Carina Saunders, 19, were found inside a duffel bag behind the Homeland at NW 23 and Rockwell on Oct. 13. She was last seen a few days earlier.

Wednesday morning, police announced they were looking for two men who were “persons of interest in the case.” One of the two, Kyle Tweed, 21, was cleared by police Wednesday afternoon. The other, Cody Perez, 21, was reported missing by his mother Oct. 10.

“Upon seeing coverage of the Bethany homicide investigation and hearing that he was a person of interest, Kyle Tweed arrived at the Bethany police headquarters this afternoon and was interviewed by investigators,” Bethany Police Chief Phil Cole said in a news release.

“Mr. Tweed was cooperative with our investigators and he is no longer considered a person of interest.”

“Cody Perez is still a person of interest in our investigation, and we still ask for public assistance in locating him.”

Perez was a culinary student and had worked at an Olive Garden restaurant in the Oklahoma City area. Tweed recently worked in the Del City area at a Taco Bueno and is a skateboard enthusiast.

Tweed’s girlfriend talks

Tweed’s girlfriend, Morgan Stevens, said Tweed called her Wednesday after he spoke with police and said he had “cleared his name.” Stevens graduated in the same class as Saunders at Mustang High School but said Tweed and Saunders had never met.

“There is no connection that I know of,” Stevens said. “He didn’t even know Carina, and he knew nothing about her body being found until I said something about it Monday night. As far as I know, he had never heard her name before that.”

Stevens said she was shocked when she heard of Saunders’ death.

“I can’t believe someone would do that to Carina,” Stevens said. “It’s hard to believe someone would want to hurt someone like her. She was really sweet. She was honest and very playful.”

Stevens said Tweed had met Perez at a party, but they were not close friends. Tweed declined to speak with the media.

Search continues

Officials said Perez may have left the state Oct. 11. He was last seen that day near Interstate 35 and Robinson Street in Norman. He may have been trying to hitchhike, possibly to California, police said.

Cole said he does not think Bethany residents should be alarmed but should always be vigilant and report suspicious activities.

Tweed’s name came up in the investigation after Perez’s mother filed a missing-person report with Oklahoma City police. In the report, she said Perez had been threatened by a man over a girlfriend.

Rachel Laraway, 38, claimed her son was having problems with a white male named “Tweet” or “Tween.”

Laraway told police she had not seen her son since Oct. 10 and Perez said he had been helping the girlfriend of the man named “Tweet” or “Tween.” The man went to Perez’s apartment and said he “was gonna take it to the next level,” according to Laraway’s report to police.

Perez had gotten his girlfriend and another girl pregnant, his mother states in the report.

Perez had not gone to work or school for a week and had a paycheck waiting for him at the Olive Garden on Memorial Road, Laraway stated in the report filed Monday.

On his Facebook page, Perez calls himself a Juggalo, which is how fans of the musical group Insane Clown Posse refer to themselves. The band’s lyrics are controversial as they touch on themes such as cannibalism, murder and necrophilia. Many of Perez’s Facebook friends are fans of the band, and photos on Saunders’ Facebook page show her wearing an Insane Clown Posse T-shirt.

Criminal record

Perez is shown on a Facebook page photo holding a hatchet.

He has a lengthy criminal history out of Tulsa County including assault and battery on a Department of Juvenile Affairs employee, possession of a stolen credit card and larceny from a house.

Laraway has not confirmed whether Perez knew Saunders.

A relative of Saunders, who asked not to be identified, said Wednesday she did not know any family members who had heard of Perez before Tuesday night.

An autopsy on Saunders’ body has not been completed, state medical examiner spokeswoman Amy Elliott said. Elliott said toxicology reports — that could take several weeks to complete will be needed — before a cause of death can be determined.
